ASSIGNMENT THREE

Cecilia, through all her life, she is pursuing her career as a good reporter. I still remember When she first entered the Communication University of China as an international journalism student, she didn't know much about journalism, and for a period of time, she even confused if this field was what she really wanted to do in the future.
In the summer of the 3rd year of university, things had changed. she got a chance to report an international outdoor sports competition for a sports channel. During the days, she worked as a journalist, she had to write news, interview the contestants and edit the news. For the first time, she felt it was quite exciting to find out what was worth to report, and did the interview job in front of the camera was also very interesting. That was a totally new experience to her, all those made her realize every day could be so different to a journalist, and experiencing so many things could make life colorful. Then she made up her mind to be a journalist,
After graduated, she worked for a sports channel, She was lucky when Beijing held the Olympic Games, she was able to report that big event, and interview a lot of top players. Her reporting ability has been improved through the practices. In the next 10 years, she devoted all her effort on news reporting and interview things. At her forties, she began to produce her own program, though she had met many difficulties, luckily she had made it through and finally accomplished her journalism career.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
Pitch 1
Last year, Shanghai had carried out a new history teaching materials for high shool students. but the history book only has last for one year. On Sept 1th, The book has been abolished. This is because a editorial for Newyork Times
named "Where is mao? China revise the history book" , the editorial has aroused a huge dispute, people qurraled on internet , on news paper, they are douting if the book has eliminated mao's revolution thought and if put the " Bill Gates" in history book is a sign that china will let the economy hero replace the political hero. But the new history book has been prepared for 8 years, put on trial for 3 years, the editor said the content did betray any rules, he accused the Newyork Times has mistaken the content of new history book.
Plan to interview SuZhiliang, the editor of new history book Joe kahn the boss of Newyork Times Beijing, and the offials from ministry of education
Asking about: 1 to the offials: what has made the history book reform has failed
2 to Su : what do you think of your new history book, when the book has been abolished, how do you think about it . the book has been douted a lot, please do some explanation about the new book.
3 to Joe kahn, what made the Newyork times published that editorial
4 and so on
Pitch 2
The courses selection of teaching unite of Beijing universities district has finished on the 16th. Influenced by the heating of stock market this year, We found out among all the courses, the course of China stock market has become the hottest one,
Plan to interview the students who have selected the course, the teach who in charge of the course
Asking about 1 why the students want to take this course , for money?
2 ask the teacher what will the students learn from the course
3 what do teachers think about the phenomenon
Pitch 3
To advocate the Green traffic for Olympic Game, Beijing decided Sept 22nd will be the " NO CAR" Day. On that day cars will be forbiden in some area from 7am to 7 pm, only buses are permitted. The bus company will add 200 more buses for that day.
Plan to interview the bus manager the car drivers and transportation offials
Asking about 1 is the public transportation of Beijing ready for Olympic, does the pubulic transportation meet the enviromental standard
2 how about the cars driver's reaction towards the 'No Car" Day , will it bring any unconvenience
3 what wil the drivers do for the Olympic transportation ( both bus and car driver)
4 and so on
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
Assignment 5
Please read the Washington Post pig disease story.
Please evaluate the story in terms of fairness and bias, focusing on how the story is sourced.
In other words, go through the story and determine the sources of all the reported facts. Please weigh how credible each source is. Then consider whether the facts she has assembled support the conclusions she draws. Has she assembled a solid foundation of facts, or is leaving out important information or points of view? You should also consider things you know about this situation that are not reported in the story.
Did this story give you any ideas for your own methods of reporting?
After reading the story, It gave me the impression that the writer do have made some survey, which make me think she is telling the truth. It has no reason for me to be skeptical about the sources because she gives specific names of organizations, experts and pig raisers. And her assertions seems true to me. I believe that she did interview some people and do a lot of work to draw her conclusions from all her materials and her assertions sound reasonable.
However, we think that this story is not quite logical and make us confused about some sources. I suppose that it maybe because it is too lengthy or because there are different patterns of thought.
Though I said this story was fair with convincing sources, I can't help feeling antipathy to one of the sentenses in which a phrase using quotation mark. (And it maintains that it has been "open and transparent" all along.) Can I say it's a bias? Maybe it's only her personal skepticism towards Chinese authority. Besides, I want to say, please forgive us for picking up every possible words to show bias in this story. Better to say it's a conditioned reflex. We are trained to do so. One course of us in last semester was to tell bias towards China in reports of western world. Of course the name of the course is not this, but I think it's the core of that course. So we say "it's biased" as soon as we look at a story reporting China.
Generally, this story did show its bias to me, what we learn from the story is we should do a full-scale research, and collect more sources when we are about to report news, also we should try our best to ensure the transparence of national bad news.
