Today we gather here to pay our respect for Cannitalia Susanto. A woman who had always lived her life being her own true self and will always be a girl at heart.
She left her home country at the mere age of 13 to survive in a foreign country without being able to speak the language. Somehow she survived her coming of age unscatched by the dark sides of the world and develop her own way of thinking and reacting, making her the individual that we had all know and love. At the age of 23 she graduated from The Communication University of China but instead of going back to her home country she decided to stay in China to begin her carreer.
At the age of 30 she had already written a world best-seller novel, a first in many to come. It had always been her dream to write a book and she worked hard for it. Her family had always been her first priority, eventhough leaving home from such a young age means that she wasn't that close to her parents. But that doesn't change her into someone who easily forgets about her family. Every step she took had always been in the best interest of her parents and sister.
Always a girl at heart she always have a smile for everyone, joining in on hopscotch and finger-paintings, she never think twice of swinging on a swing or just hanging onto the monkey bars in the playground, "We all need to be a child at heart, life won't be so depressing that way." She always said with a smile.
She was always a confidant to all her friends, all turning to her for a piece of advice. She had always been dubbed as a phsycology by her friends, always listening when they needed someone to listen and helping when they needed help. She wasn't a life of a party though, she loves long evenings alone in her room settling on a good book or just typing away on her computer doing whatever she feels like doing, always with that smile of hers.
She had decided from when she was just a little girl that she will adopt a child, "I want to adopt a pre-teen though, because they need love more than any baby in the world." she said to ayone who's listening. She felt that most people who adopts always wanted a baby. But she saw they hurt and anger in those 'older children' eyes. And eventhough she had never gone through what they had gone through, she understood. I am happy to say that the lucky little 12 year-old girl she had saved from a nightmare is me. I grew up in her heart, proudly becoming more and more like her with each and everyday.
Today I ask you to always remember her, a woman with her own piece of mind, forever a girl at heart, who loved her family more than anything in this world. Cannitalia Susanto, my savior, my mother.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
1. About the death of Pavaroti and how teenagers today seems to forget more and more about classical music. Interviewing local students and students form the music major.
2. Foreigner boom in China and how Chinese students are less and less threaten by foreigners 'stealing' their job opportunities. Interviewing foreigners and Chinese graduates.
3. Foreign students in China today is not as passive as before. Slowly but sure they created their own way of surviving in China. Interviewing foreigners who opened their own international restourants, business, and even magazines and newpapers.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
