ASSIGNMENT TWO
Please paste the broadcast script you wrote in class on Sept. 10 based on the news wire report here.
Operas open in some countries every week, so your choice of a lead is poor. The lead should say what is NEW and different. In this case, it is the first time a Wagner opera opened in this part of the world. Alternately, you could highlight the fact that an opera is highlighting contemporary political trouble.
It is good you kept the sentences short and simple.
Please try to write this again.
Das Rheingold, an opera, composed by Richard Wagner opened in Bangkok. The director says it is a critics to the corruped Thailand government.
The opera depicts a divine Eastern country which is struck by the greed Western culture. The script got crafted for the modern Asia but the theme about the political corruption was remained.
Shane: To be honest with you, I was absent from your first lecture, so actually I didn't have the chance to read the original piece of news. After class, I asked a classmate to memorize that news for me, and that's how I finished my homework. Obviously, this method didn't work out well. Could you please send me the original piece of news?? I believe I can write this better.
P.S. I apologize for my absence, and I promise that this won't happen again.
ASSIGNMENT THREE
Please paste the Obituary assignment here.
A Just-for-fun Obituary
Shane, a great talker, closed his mouth forever in a hospital at the age of 86. We hope he can continue conversations with God himself in heavens above.
Born in August 1986, he is a man of proud and dignity. Through whole life, he has devoted himself in the career of journalism. As a prestigious reporter and anchor, he witnessed many historical events including the Taiwan unification, the merge of Palestine and Israel and the great tsunami in Japan.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law George and Selena. Grandchildren Lionel and Frank. There are also nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.
Arrogant and maybe annoying, he is a man who pursued for perfection and excellence. Talkative and sometimes noisy, he is a person who brought us joy and happiness. He may not be loved by everyone, but he will always be remembered.
Services were held at You-kNOw-WHERE Hall in Beijing at 10 AM on August 30, 2072. Interment at 4 PM in Dou-Ni-Wan Cemetery.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
The food price in China is rising. Many people rushed to campus dinning halls in order to save money (foods in campus are much cheaper). This action is now restricted by the state. I want to interview those money-saving people, as well as collegestudents and manager of the campus dinning hall. Shots include food markets, school dinning halls and supermarkets.
This is good.
Chinese food is quite popular throughout the world. I believe many foreign tourist know about Beijing Roast Ducks. But what about other Beijing traditional snacks and foods? There are a lot of other delicious foods like, little spicy lobsters and GeDa soup. I want to interview the chefs from some prestigious Beijing restaurants. Let them tell us the detailed information of the snacks. I will also interview some customers in the restaurant. Shots include restaurants, and mostly the dishes and snacks.
This could be a popular segment on YouTube, or on a food or travel show.
Chinese people love sports like pingpong, badminton etc. Westerners prefer baseball, football and hockey. What caused this difference? I want to interview teenagers from both China and abroad. Shots include playgrounds, gyms.
This could be quite interesting. You would need to demonstrate it was true somehow.
Assignment Five
Final Analysis This news story encompasses all kinds of facts from different sources, which includes interviewing with local people, FAO, experts, professors, analysts from CITIC Securities as well as officials of Chinese government to support her conclusion. Although some of the facts are not reliable or proper, the whole story is trustworthy to most of the people. However, the story is biased to some extend by claiming Chinese government for its irresponsibility and not sharing the information with the public. The story mentions little about the effort that the Chinese government made, and it contains little comments from Chinese government officials which compared to other sources are not enough.. From this news story we learn that before we get down to the report we should make all-around investigation and researching, let the facts speak for themselves. Of we want to promote our personal opinion through the report, we could omit or blur some of the facts inattentively. Also clarify the source can make the story more reliable. The author has excellent writing skill. The first two paragraphs as delayed lead are very attractive. But the story is not well organized in logical order. For example, the person Huang’s identity in the last paragraph of page 2 remained unknown until page 4, readers may feel confused. Overall, it is a very good report that we can learn a lot from..
