ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
China's Economy: A new invented energy takes the places of oil and coal in China. Therefore China becomes independent from the world’s fuel market, and also its pollution decreases. I will interview one of the inventors from Science Institute of China, Wu Jinglian, a famous economist, and an analyst of international relationship. I will take some photos of the usage of this energy in factories and people’s daily life.
EU: All the members of EU has passed the constitution. The UK at last accepts Euro. Europe has become truly unified. I will interview an official of EU, a spokesman of the UK government, and also some analysts of international relationship. I will take a photo of all the leaders getting together at the end of the conference.
Products Safety: China has passed a law to set regulations on the export products. All the export goods will receive strict tests. I will interview the admonistrators of Quality Supervision of China and America. I will take a photo of the goods from China in American shop.
ASSIGNMENT FIVE
Some sources are credible, for they are clear and definite. These credible sources show interviewees’ names or organizations, such as “Juab Lubroth, head of infectious diseases for the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization”. Some sources are not credible, for they are not clear and definite. For example, something like “China says” is not specific, and it doesn’t tell us who says or which orgnization says.
The facts she assembled support her conclusions well. The theme of this article is “pig dieases in China worry the world”. The comments from those scientists and officials show people’s anxiety. The disease has already infected China’s neighbours, China haven’t offered the samples, and the vaccines doesn’t come into effect yet. All of these facts really worry the world.
I think she has bias. There is an expression that “China, the target of resent criticism for the safety of its food and other exports”. At least, she has some preoccupations on China. The word “worry” in the topic proves itself negative not positive. Therefore the information she collects to support her conclusions is single-sided. Besides, the sources of the positive information are not clear and enough, while thoseof the negative are very specific.
Question: Do you think your article could make Americans worried?
