ASSIGNMENT THREE
Please paste the Obituary assignment here.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good evening.
We gather here today for the same purpose--to celebrate the birthday of this beautiful lady with an over-lasting young heart: Lynn Liu.
75 years ago, the birth of a lovely baby girl brought an ordinary Shanghai family great happiness. In the following 75 years of this girl's life span, she has grown up to a graceful lady and brought happiness to all the Chinese people with her outstanding work in sports culture industry.
Lynn and I have been close friends since the last century. She is the sort of person who always stands out in a crowd, because of not only her height but also her unique ideas. She took up sports culture business when most of Chinese people knew little about this industry; She grasped the opportunity of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and let the world know a true China--an energetic and promising country; She and her husband devote themselves to helping thousands of poor children to continue their studies.
Lynn always says,"Sports is a sort of culture, which can make one both healthy and happy." Health and happiness are two things she weighs a lot. So at last, My appeal is that let us wish her healthy and happy all the time!
Thank you.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
1.Volunteers of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be held in less than 1 year. The volunteer work of the game is a vital part to show how we Chinese people behave to the world. So how has the preparation work been done in this volunteer training work? There are many students in our school who has taken part in the training programme. My plan is to interview two or three of them, including Melody Li and Zoe Zhu, to let them tell us about the so far process of their volunteer training project. I also plan to shot the training lesson and the Olympic stadium.
2.Shinzo Abe resigns
Recently, one of the hit international news is that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe steps down. The Sino-Japanese relationship is very important in international affairs. How Abe's resignation will affect this relationship? These two country's young people have their own thoughts. I plan to interview two exchange students from Japan who now live in China and two Chinese students to talk about their view on Abe's resignation. The interview itself is the main shot.I want to construct a news report on Sino-Japanese relationship from the angle of university students of both countries.
3.Plan of National Day
Oct.1st is Chinese National Day. We Chinese people can get a 7-day-long holiday which is called "Golden Weed".And this year, Chinese traditional Mid-autumn Festival is very close to the National Day. How will university students make use of this holiday, especially for those overseas students who come to China for the first time? My plan is to interview 3 overseas students from different countries and one or two Chinese students to talk about their plan. This news is relaxing so my shot will include celebrating ornaments of some department stores and the scene of party.
ASSIGNMENT FIVE
PIG DISEASE
BIAS
1. The paragraph of vaccine Her reason is very persuasive, but she leaves out two points:
(1) Did other countries, including America, make money from vaccines when there was an epidemic first broke out in their realm?
(2) Did other countries insist on the remaining of the patents and royalties of the vaccine they invented? Is it a convention for all countries?
2. According to the article, it's likely that China would rather delay the finding of the cure than share the tissue samples in order to make a fortune from the vaccine. (Is this a right conclusion? ) But the point is, how much money will China lose due to the death of bunches of pigs? Is it less than the money made from the vaccine? Or more? Is it worth for China to do this? Obviously the author omits it.
About Reporting Methods
1. To express one's own idea by selecting materials, though all the materials are true.
2. Using eloquent evidence to express ideas.
3. Finding enough sources and related stories.
4. To introduce the situation is far from enough, we should add the deep analysis to the superficial phenomenon.
My personal views
A: There is an old saying in China which is similar to " Do not wash your dirty linen in public" . Maybe this old tradition contributes to China's reluctance to publicize the outbreaks of SARS and bird flu.
B: In recent years, China and its media increasing realize that there is no good in hiding this kind of information. So more and more related rules are carried out to ensure the transparence of catastrophic news. Though we still lag behind, but we are making progress.
C: The functions of media vary from country to country. They are the objective outcomes of each country's specific history and coincident with the inner structure of the society. From the day China's modern media were born, they are the organs of parties. They are not used to make profits, but to publicize certain party's policy and creed. So the media should never be supposed to harm the party's interest. Since the Communist Party is the sole one in the saddle, if the media criticized the government too severely, maybe the whole country will become turbulent.
D:We Chinese are taught to love our country even we are quite small. Patriotism is a character we value high. Thus, we cannot stand any slander about China. Even the American news is telling the truth, as this pig-thing, we are reluctant to accept the truch. We just can't. China, which is ruled by Communist Party of China now, is our belief. We love China, so we support CPC.
E: Each country has its own history and tradition, why they all should accord to America's standard? Who gives America the right to act like the monarch of the world?
