Chinese pulitzer prize makes its debut in Beijing
At the age of 6, lilian began to cast news in front of her family. When she reached her seventies, she made her dream come true by founding Chinese pulitzer prize-“golden pen”.
Lilian lau is now a professor at Communication University of China. After all her 40 years of busy work, she turned back to embrace her mother school.
For the first two years after graduation, she started her career as a journalist in Reuters. “what you regrets is what tortues you all through your life, I will not let myself regret”.following her motto, she quit her job in 2010 for further development.
Lilian flew to America and studied Mass Communication in University of Maryland With ambition and graduate degree, she came back to china in 2014. Then she joint the reporting team to africa. “Out of Africa” made her the reporter of the year.
In the following years, she worked as an editor and part-time reporter for Xinhua News Agency. The young journalist wrote a news feature“Taiwan Today” which portrayed life of Tainwanese after the big reunion. It was this feature that attract all the attentions from media all over the world.
She never forget her motherland. With contributions to 65 translation works and thousands of print news and TV programme, the experienced journalist retired. In addition to teaching, she set up a foundation to help ambitious young journalists. Finally on her 75th birthday, she made her “Golden Pen” out of the blue.
“I want it to be the Pulitzer Prize of China.”she proudly told us this morning. “Although pen is not the tool with use nowadays, I want to remind the journalist of something. A good story is always drafted by studious hands and a thoughtful mind.”
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
One:
The food price has been going up recently in China. But the student canteen is trying its best to keep the price steady. Will the rise of the price become a huge threat to the harmony of campus life? In this story I will find out.
I will interview students who concern the price. And the staff and manager of the canteen will also be involved.
Two:
Since the 2008 Olympic is approaching, the attention of the whole world is attracted by Beijing. But not only the game is attractive, but also the life of a normal construction worker for Olympic games.
In this story, a normal construction worker will be the center. But interviewing officials related is also very important.
Three:
China will welcome a new tide of graduates. What are they going to do in the future may reflect a little about which area is popular.
In this story, I will interview some graduates from different univerisities and majors. I will also ask some career managers for advices for graduates.
ASSIGNMENT FIVE:
The analysis of the pig disease story.
The source of the story is quite credible. It introduce the information from the government, the villagers and some experts. At the first page of this news, the writer summarized the pig disease story and screetly put her own opinion in the story.
But we aren’t superstitious that it is a perfectly fair and neutral reporting.
On the one hand, she said that there were signs that the infected pigs had polluted the drinking water. And all through the story, there are no clear demonstration except the content of the last paragraph. But we can see from the last paragraph, the scene may not be the reporter or the researcher’s first hand observation. She has no evidence to prove the polluted drinking water theory.
And on the other hand, we think that the reporter has missed an important point of the story. All she wants to do is to show that Chinese government refuses to be helpful in pig diseace control. And she also takes SARS as an example. But she has forgotten that China had successfully keep SARS under control. Maybe the international organizations should give more trust to Chinese experts. But news is not about guess, it needs facts and figures. Providing the details of international aids and letting the readers judge may be better.
In general, we thought the story is quite a successful report. We have learnt that we need facts and figures to back our conclusions. And these sources must be credible. We can’t get informations from someone who are not related to the story.
