ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
!. A man was killed by car near Beijing Second Language University on Sept. 11st.
interviewees: the doorkeeper who might have seen this accident, students of that university, other eyewitnesses
2. There's a change in paying for the network fee in our campus.
interviees: the people who work in the campus network service center, students who have some opinions about this improvement
3. The new teaching building has been opened since the biginning of this semester.
interviewees: teachers, students in our campus, the cleaning ladies.
LARA, Here's the thing: These stories have zero interest to You Tube viewers in foreign countries. You have ignored the instructions completely.
Assignment about Pig Disease(group with Mandy&Sarina)
The sources are listed: Lo inhuman, a 55-year-old pig farmer: credible Chinese government: no China: not really Some experts: OK although no name indicated but the word “expert” is quite convincing Juan Labret, head of infectious diseases for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization: credible Anthon Huang, editor of the Journal of Global Health Governance and an assistant professor at Seton Hall University: credible Vincent Martin, an animal health officer for the FAO in Beijing:credible Chineseofficials: no Officials at the Ministry of Agriculture: not really Mao Changing, an analyst with CITIC Securities in Beijing: credible FAO: credible Paper published in a new online scientific journal called Plops ONE: credible Public paper released by the Chinese scientists: not really Chinese government: no Local officials: no Chen Singing, secretary general of the pig breeding division of China’s Association of Animal and Veterinary Sciences: credible Chinese scientists: OK although no name indicated but the word “expert” is quite convincing Zhu Gouging, a professor of veterinary medicine at Yang Zhou University: credible Local media: no Hoang Van Nam, deputy director of Vietnam’s animal health department: credible XiaoHanuman: credible Researcher Chrissie Ding: credible
In my opinion, true name and specific title or department are more credible than anonymity. “EXPERT” or “SCIENTIST” is more credible than common people. But when referring to Chinese government or Chinese officials, which indicates no names, the author might make others regard them not really credible because of so many foreign reports showing them hiding information.
The report is biased in my mind. It looks more like blaming Chinese government for causing pig disease worldwide. It is embodied in the following two aspects: 1. Source: the author citing more credible source when she wants to support her opinion that Chinese government is doing a bad job in controlling pig disease. For example, when the author reports the threat facing other countries caused by China’s pig disease, she cites the word of Juan Labret, head of infectious diseases for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, which is quite credible. But when she reports that the Chinese government is defending itself, she doesn’t cite credible enough source, just saying “Chinese governments” or “Chinese officials” without pointing out specifically who. 2. Language: she uses a lot of negative words in describing Chinese government, for example, “conducted by”, which indicates despotism, “incentives to cover up”, which indicates occlusion, and “cursory peer review”, which indicates imprudence.
I think her facts support her conclusion. But if I report, I would like to focus more on how the pig disease affects people's lives, not only their pigs, especially the farmers’, because they are the direct victims of this disaster. Their responses are closely related to the measures that the government takes to cope with this matter. Also, it will be covered in my story that the compares among the avian flu, BSE, and SARS, which are all influential epidemic diseases happened around China as well as the whole world. I would also include the contributions China has made during the period, which will make the report less biased.
