Dont use day of week in lead.

Landlords of Beijing markets notorious for counterfeit goods sales sign a deal [declaring their willingness and actions] to [eliminate] evict [the] tenants who repeatedly violate copyright law. THEY MADE THE DEAL WITH LUCURY BRAND REPRESENTATIVES< WHO WERE SUING THEM IN CHINESE COURTS. [Under the supervision of the luxury-brand representatives, the landlords are required to evict the tenants offending the law for a second time]. On meeting with Peter Mandelson, EU Trade Commissioner, China's Commerce Minister Bo Xilai said:" although some achievements have been made, there is a long way to go for China" in cracking down counterfeiting and piracy.

YOU HAVE MISQUOTED BO. MANDELSON SAID THIS. OTHERWISE, GOOD.

ASSIGNMENT THREE
Please paste the Obituary assignment here.

Braggadocio's Obituary
George Zhao, the biggest media corporation owner, died on Sep. 7th, 2085 at his home at the age of 100, due to heart attack. He was born in Baotou, Inner Mongolia in 1985, who turned a small news agency into one of the biggest media corporations in the world, China News Corp., a conglomerate that includes television, feature films, online services, newspapers and books. Over the years George acquired more and more media outlets all over the world, from China and Europe to the U.S.. As one of the world's wealthiest men, his donation to his alma mater Communication University of China boosted the development in the first half century and made it renowed as one of the worlds' most admiring educational institute. George Awards, which is established by him is the most significant media award for Chinese media.

ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.

The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.

Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?

Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.

1. Quality problems of "Made in China" products
People to interview: Chinese Consumers, gevernmental departments, manufacturers
shots: factories, goods in the supermarket

This is too general.

2. Beijing's Traffic Problems before 2008 Olympics
People to interview: drivers, local residents, experts on urban planning
shots: kinds of public transportation and roads

This is a good idea. We need more details in the pitch.

3. China's stockmarket boom and spree
People to interview: ordinary stockholders, economic experts

shots: exchange market

AGAIN, TOO GENERAL.

ASSIGNMENT FIVE

1. We found some incredible points in this article.

interviewee or paragraph

quotation or remark

suspicion or question

1.Para. 3 on the first page

"wiping out entire herds" It's too exaggerative
2. "some experts" in Para. 6 of the first page "some experts....are skeptical" Who are these experts?
3. Last para. on page one "the virus has been found in ....Vietnam and Burma" Does the pig disease found in the neighboring countries necessarily come from China?
4. Chen Qingming in Para. 3 Page 2

"the statistics are not accurate" The secretary didn't give any reasons or facts to make that point

2. Question to the author:
As an assistant for a foreign journalist, I am quite interested that how the author deals with the interview refusals from the organizations, esp. the government and how to finally get the information she wants.

3. Generally, this is a good news story. Sources quoted from different people and groups make the article reasonable and balanced.

Actually, I didn't find any bias in this article. However, I read it with bias and stereotypes----the western journalists are always unfriendly when covering the Chinese issues. But I failed in detecting the enmity in this story.

Moreover, how the author organized the raw materials and the way the author start the article with is also very impressive and shows a mastery of news writing.

GOOD OBSERVATIONS. I AGREE WITH MOST OF THEM, ALTHOUGH I"M NOT SURE I AGREE THAT WESTERN JOURNALISTS ARE ALWAYS UNFRIENDLY WHEN COVERING CHINA. I THINK MOST WESTERNERS HERE ARE SINOPHILES. I WONDER IF THE TONE OF WESTERN JOURNALISM IS JARRING... FOR EXAMPLE, DO YOU THINK WESTERN JOURNALISTS ARE ANY FRIENDLIER TO THEIR OWN GOVERNMENTS OR THE GOVERNMENTS OF OTHER COUNTRIES? I HOPE TO HEAR YOU AND YOUR CLASSMATES VIEWS ON THIS.
