What do you want your job to be in 20 years?
working for an NGO for cultral exchange
In 5 years?
freelancer or journalist for foreign media
When you graduate?
assistant for a foreign media with no contract and no protection :-(
Are you interested in a career in journalism?
Yes, very much, but not with a firm resolution
How can this course help you reach your goals?
to firm my resolution in pursuing journalism, to improve my writing skills
Goals for this course:
Are you interested in producing for this course:
Podcasts? OK
Video segments for YouTube? Why not? (but a little afraid of putting personal stuff on the internet)
Newspaper or wire stories? Sure, but need to improve my writing skills first.
A Blog? Yes
A regular news broadcast? I have to force myself not be lazy if I want to start one, while I'm always lazy...
Guests:
Would you like guest speakers from any particular professions?
Yes, definitely. experts from media (Chinese and foreign), economy, politics, environmental protection, etc. also people with stories that can trigger our curiosity to write or report something about him/her.
Experience:
Please briefly describe any work you have done in the news media.
2 months in Shanghai Dragon TV (forced by parents)
participating the making of a documentary for autism, did almost everything because the producer and cameraman don't speak Chinese.
5 months till now working as assistant for an American media, two Dutch media
How many television packages have you produced at this school? (Please include links if possible)
around five including radio and TV
Do you have any production skills necessary to run a news broadcast? Please list.
basic knowledge about audition, premier pro.
News Habits:
Which foreign and Chinese newscasts do you regularly watch?
CNN, CBS, ABC, etc, but not too often
How familiar are you with foreign news broadcasts? Can you watch them at home? Over the Internet?
I like American news broadcasts, esp with female newscasters. I like their style and the production. I can watch major western TV stations at home (like CNN, ABC, CBS, BBC, Bloomberg, Frances' TV5, etc) but not here in Beijing. I don't have a satelite. I guess I can find ways to watch them on the internet, but it's too slow. There's an FTP inside the school which provides news broadcasts updates, but not everyday.
Please list some strengths and weaknesses of foreign news broadcasts compared to Chinese broadcasts.
strength: relatively more freedom in report, better equipment, better quality of prooduction
weakness: more negative reports on Chinese affairs (not sure if it's really the weakness, but at least in China they'll be limited or criticized more)
What newspapers and news Web sites do you visit regularly?
domestic: Beijing News (Xin Jing Bao), Sohu, MSN news page, Xinhua, China Daily
foreign: South China Morning Post, CNN, but not so often as domestic ones
Do you read the Washington Post and the New York Times? (Hint: You should)
rarely. But I once read them pretty often when I was preparing for an exam in which a lot of the reading materials were from the two papers.
ASSIGNMENT TWO
Please paste the broadcast script you wrote in class on Sept. 10 based on the news wire report here.
ASSIGNMENT THREE
Please paste the Obituary assignment here.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
1. Recentlz a town in Gansu Province has cancelled the difference between city hukou and agriculture hukou.
interview a professor in China Academy of Social Sciences, who has doné research on China's hukou system.
introduce the history of hukou system and the huge gap and differences between difference hukou, the problems brought by the implementation of hukou system, China's improvement measures
2. Immigration project in Three Gorges Dam area, the last group of immigrants will be moved out in 2008
interview some of the last group of the Three Gorges Dam immigrants, interview some of the earlier immigrants about their lives in a new place, interview relevant professor about the problems (social problems)brought by the huge immigration project
I think another news report about the Three Gorges Dam project can be done through the angle of environmental influences, the advantage and disadvantage it has brought.
Sorry I don't have much battery on my laptop. Will write more tomorrow.
Assignment 5:
In terms of bias and fairness, we strongly think that the report's sources are mostly one-sided.
He did quote information from the Chinese government side, but mostly statistics, while figures don't really speak for itself if you don't give an explanation. Like the figures of dead pigs. There are plenty of Chinese government announcement and press releases. Why he just cited certain figures?
We think western style of reporting seems very fair, with all the piling of facts and figures and quotes. But actually it's not necessary the case. The angle of choosing materials makes a lot of difference.
For the detailed analysis the reporter turned to organizations outside of China, or at least people with the opposite view to the Chinese government. Why didn't he cited more explanation from the Chinese government side?
Hence, we do believe the writer does have bias to a certain extent.
From judging the "pig news", we've learned that when we analyse a news story, first we should clear about the source of of quotation and the accuracy of the statistics. Then we may judge is there any logic problems, and whether we can be persuade to believe the conclusion the author made by the facts and detailed the story provides.
when we read or report the news, we may be alert of the news bias. The author may never write down his own words, but the data and the quotations he provided are fully express his idea over the issue. so when we do our reporting, we can be use the facts and source which is favor of our idea to help us to make the story much more persuasive.
PLEASE GO AHEAD AND CHANGE IT YOURSELF. REMEMBER TO CHANGE IT BOTH ON THIS PAGE AND ON THE STUDENT PAGE THAT LINKS TO HERE.
