ASSIGNMENT THREE
Please paste the Obituary assignment here.
A happy old lady, Diana Lu, went to see her beloved ones in the heaven on Sep.23 2077, three monthes after her 90th birthday.
She has been a celebrity in the 3oth and 50th of the 21 century, though she herself would rather prefer not to mention this, but still these parts can not be easily skipped.
She had a very happy childhood with her parents' care and keen friendship from her friends, it was then she developed a sunny personality, which she benefited from so much in her later years.
After four years of study of Journalism in University, she wanted to experience the real life and be the one who informs the world what's happening every day. She became an outposted journalist for New York Times. During her touring around the world, she had a particular sympathy towards the civilians in the war-torn area like Iraq and Palestine, so she spent two years there reporting the people rebuilding their homes and calling the international community to help these people. She could have won a Pulitzer Price but she refused to give up her Chinese nationality but still what she had done earned her a Nobel Peace Price.
However, what she treasured most is still her family and her biggest wish is to give love to as many people as possible.
"My mom is a great woman, she persued love bravely and had a well of love in her own heart which will never dry. We are so proud of her." Her older daughter said.
"She paved us a green road in the Middle East, although just a beginning, but that encourages us to go on making it a garden. We all wish her happy hereafter." said Thomas Spitzer,( Spitzer is one of the most prominent journalists then in reporting International News, especially in the Middle East)
Lu will be burried on 26 Sep., just beside her beloved husband. Wish her still be a loving angel in the heaven.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
Assignment 5 Due Sat .Sept 22.
Please read the Washington Post pig disease story.
Please evaluate the story in terms of fairness and bias, focusing on how the story is sourced.
Firstly, we have to admit that the reporter doesn't ignor the improvements that Chinese governments have made. From the SARS to the Pig Disease, the transparence of the Chinese government's releasing the information has improved a lot.
However, bias can still be seen in the report.
1. in the report, many things are ralted to the U.S., but the writer claims it to be a world problem, does the U.S. stand for the whole world? It's still an American perspective.
2.Same animal disease has broken out in Europe before but rarely have news reporting that all other countries are urging this country to provide the tissue sample for a co-research? Is this also a kind of bias?
3.In the first part the writer mentioned that it was the pig disease that made pork prices soar in the last year and also push the inflation rate to the highest level. But, both the price mechanism and the inflation rates are complicated issues, how can it be soly affected by the pig disease?
4. About the sources.
I have to admit that some of the sources like Juan Lubroth or Vincent Martin are quite authoritative, but what do they know about the pig disease situation in China, in the small villages far away from the Eastern developed areas, when they themselves are so far away as in Rome or, a little bit nearer, in Beijing?
The opinions of individual professors or experts like Zhu Guoqiang are especially worth noticing, They may give their own understandings, but that's not a general idea. Besides we don't know the incentive, since Amrican journalists has a keen interest in interviewing Chinese people, especially intellects, who harbour an atigovernment attitude as their sources.
Another source which seems to be quite credibleb is the paper published in PLoS ONE. The journal itself is not quite so famous, and it's just a paper, we know many papers that are proved to be incorrect, this can not be a 100 percent sure source either.
Lastly, the farmers that the writer mentioned all live in Foshan, so trivial compared to the whole country. If she wants to describe the terrible situation all over China, isn't it better for her to go to more places and get the first-hand statistics or at least experience rather than citing those governmental statistics that she repeatedly described as not accurate?
My Qustions:
1. Is the writer a reporter always writes reports on China or a reporter writes on animal disease?
2 Has she written any animal disease before this?
