ASSIGNMENT TWO
The temporary barrier in the Three Gorges Dam has been blown up. The explosion has unleashed the full force of the Yangtze River. Before exploring, ninety percent of the fish in the river have been driven away. The general manager says, the blasts have created more than 67 billion cubic feet of fragments. For the project, more than 1.13 million people have been relocated. Officials say, they are sensitive to the dam’s massive environmental impact.
ASSIGNMENT THREE
Chinese war correspondent, Annie Zhao, has died. Annie is considered by many to be the greatest correspondent of her generation. She died this morning in her hometown Tangshan with her family and close friends around. She was 75.
Annie was born in 1986. After graduating from the Communication University of China, she spent five years traveling around the world on her own. During the period, she became accomplished in ten languages, such as English, French, German, Italian, Arabic and so on. In 2014, the Iran war broke out. She went to Iran as a war correspondent of BBC. In the war, she went deep into the mountainous area of Iran and came out with lots of veracious and timely news about the reality. Her reports not only expressed the stalwart spirit of Iranian people, but also disclosed the evildoings of American soldiers. Annie’s reports called on the support of all over the world to the Iranian people. Under the pressure, the United States President Hilary declared to withdraw American troops from Iran. Since Iran war, Annie marked an epoch in the press, and she was considered as “Robert Capa” in modern war field. She went back to China as soon as the war ended. Then she was appointed advisor by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dealing with the relationships between China and Arabic countries. Owing to her deep knowledge and understanding to international politics, she was appointed the Foreign Minister in 2036 and became the first woman Foreign Minister since China was founded.
The funeral will be held tomorrow. The leaders of all circles in the world have condoled her family on the death of Annie Zhao. The NewYork Times editorialized “she is the most attractive and intelligent woman”.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
1. Why does Taiwan try to be a member of UN, despite it knows that it is impossible?
I want to interview the former Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.
spots: When can the main land and Taiwan be one?
will it bring war between the both?
2. will the resistence which comes from America affect 2008 Beijing Olympic Games?
I want to interview the Foreign Minister of China, Yang Jieshi
spots: Do you think tha American senators's goal can come true?
the Chinese Government's actions
3.How to deal with the so-called problems of Chinese Human Rights?
I want to interview the PM of China, Wen Jiabao
spots: the differences of human rights between Chian and Americ
do you think human rights are the domestic problems or international problems?
what actions the government has taken?
ASSIGNMENT FIVE
I think the whole article is obviously opposed to the policies that the Chinese Government has taken. Whether the sources she has picked up or the words she uses, to some extent, reveal the bias.
First, there are many important sources without exact tipsters. For example, when mentioning the information from the Chinese Government, there are always no exact officials or the relevant departments. On the other hand, many comments she picks up are from some experts without names or titles. Despite she has covered information from many fields and they seem sufficient, they are still not clear enough.
Second, some of the author’s quotations are not directly cited from speakers. For example, “The FAO said in interviews last week that it has confirmed that the disease is moving to the west, where some breeders from the southern areas had taken their pigs to keep them safe in the early months of the disease”.
Third, the sources from Chinese Government are quite fewer than other sources. To some extent, what Chinese Government said is not quite similar to others, which make readers confused that which source is true. The author always picks up other sources to refute the estimates or something from Chinese Government.
The questions I want to ask the author:
1. Have you ever done full field survey about the pig disease happening in China?
2. What is the purpose of writing this article, to emphasize the food security of China or something else?
3. Have you ever considered the impact of your news to China’s international fame in food section?
4. Do you like China? What is the image of China in your mind?
From this article I learn that a piece of news must fair and impersonal. The sources you pick up must be all-sided, despite the news is bias. Furthermore, we should overcome difficulties and personal fancy to bring out fair and impersonal news.
