Please paste the broadcast script you wrote in class on Sept. 10 based on the news wire report here. China’s official news agency says, China accuses a US engineers’ group of rejecting the Chinese wireless encryption system.
Xinhua News Agency says, the US engineers’ group is conspiring against Chinese standards and unfairly violating ISO rules. Chinese government will support its own standards, and they have asked the ISO to nullify its rejection.
ASSIGNMENT THREE
Please paste the Obituary assignment here. I think everyone has known her, Ann, an optimistic person. She is not a millionaire, but she leads a valuable life. She cannot make everything go as her wish, but she lets her dream come true. She is not big shot, but she is irreplaceable for the people around her. Her college life was very happy. After graduating from the Communication University of China, Ann decided to try different jobs and experienced diverse lives. In the first ten years, she had been a soldier of the border defense army, and then went to a local government department doing some clerical work. Everyone thought she got a very good job, but she didn’t satisfy with the current condition, because there had been always a dream in her mind—to be a newspaper journalist. As maintaining the dream, she left for a newspaper office in her thirty and began her news career. From the practical work, she learnt how to be a qualified journalist and accumulated massive experience on editing and reports-writing. At the same time, her reports more and more appeared on the front page and she got more chance to involve the great news events reporting.
Thanks for the job, Ann could travel to many place, get touch with various people and witness historical events and accidents. Now we still can recall her many outstanding news reports which records great moments in the past. Although the progress for her today’s achievement is full of difficulties and hardship, she was successful in her career and made her dream come true. When she retired, she had been the chief editor of the newspaper office.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
1 Dabeiyao, belonged to the CBD, now is one of the most properous place in Beijing. We can see many skyscrapers. But there are also some poor people living in crude flat sheds. We will inspect the gutter and report the poor people's lives in CBD.
2 Interview some my classmates and graduates, get to know what they future career plan or how they feel about their present jobs. It will reflect the Chinese college students' job trends.
3 My boyfriend's professor David Tool is a warmhearted American volunteer for Beijing Olympic Games. Interview him and got to know what his view of Beijing Olympic Games.
Pig Disease in China Worries the World In my opinion, the report has bias. Take some obvious content for example. First, the blue ear disease has been controlled. The secretary general of the pig breeding division of China’s Association of Animal and Veterinary Chen Qingming said in the report “some local officials have provided their most conservative estimates in order to protect their good reputations”. But on August 21st 2007, the direct general of China’s Association of Animal and Veterinary Yuan Youling had said the government estimates is credible, because they have established the epidemic situation notification network. The county level and the provincial level organization can directly report the epidemic situation. I think Chen shirked his responsibility and the source is not quite credible.
WHAT RESPONSIBILITY IS CHEN SHIRKING? I'D LIKE YOU TO CONSIDER WHAT I SAID IN CLASS ABOUT SOURCES: MID LEVEL SOURCES WORK ON AN ISSUE AS THEIR JOB AND THE TOP SPOT IN AND ORGANIZATION IS BEHOLDEN TO POLITICS.
SECOND, THINK ABOUT WHAT YUAN IS SAYING: IT IS CREDIBLE BECAUSE THEY HAVE ESTABLISHED A NETWORK. DOES ESTABLISHING A NETWORK PRECLUDE OFFICIALS GIVING CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATES?
THIRD, DOES IT MATTER WHETHER THE DISEASE IS NOW UNDER CONTROL FOR THE MAIN POINT OF THE STORY, WHICH IS THAT CHINA (AGAIN) IS BEING SECRETIVE AND NOT SHARING INFORMATION WITH THE WORLD COMMUNITY?
Second, the report said China withheld information and virus sample because of business interests or intellectual property. I doubt with it. Yuan Youling, the direct general of China’s Association of Animal and Veterinary also claimed on August 21st 2007 that China had always been keeping close cooperation with FAO and OIE, and no international organization had required the virus sample.
The sources in the report as Yanzhong Huang and Vincent Martin may not very accurate for the reason that they did not see the whole progress or they only represented of their own interests.
MARTIN MAY ONLY SEE HIS OWN INTERESTS, BUT WHO CAN SEE THE WHOLE PICTURE? CRITICIZING SOMEONE ON THIS BASIS ALONE IS NOT MEANINGFUL.
SHOULDN'T MARTIN KNOW WHETHER HIS GROUP HAS REQUESTED THE VIRUS SAMPLES OR NOT? IF YUAN SAYS NO INTERNATIONAL GROUP HAS REQUIRED IT, THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM REQUESTING IT. IT WOULD ALSO REINFORCE THE POINT THAT CHINA IS NOT EASILY COOPERATING.
And third, the report does not include the achievement that China has gotten on controlling the blue ear disease. Actually Chinese government has done a lot of work and the pork price has fallen back in the market, but the writer only mentioned little things about these facts and details. In a word, the report was not very fair because some quotations were not objective and credible enough.
WHETHER THE GOVERNMENT HAS DONE A LOT OF WORK OR NOT IS BESIDE THE POINT OF THE ARTICLE, WHICH IS THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT BEING TRANSPARENT WITH THE INTERNATIONAL HEALTH COMMUNITY, AND THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAS NOT BEEN EFFECTIVE IN REACHING OUT TO FARMING COMMUNITIES LIKE THE ONE IN FOSHAN WITH DISEASE CONTROL INFORMATION AND ENFORCEMENT.
But we can learn from it that use the lot of quotations and sources to express our own opinions and to make reports look more objective and fair.
MAY I SUGGEST THAT CRITICIZING THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT BIAS UNLESS IT IS UNFAIR. AND MAY I SUGGEST THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO DELIBERATELY DISCOUNT INFORMATION FROM CREDIBLE SOURCES BECAUSE YOU DID NOT WANT TO BELIEVE THEM.
