Career goal:
What do you want your job to be in 20 years? government official
In 5 years? government official
When you graduate? government official
Are you interested in a career in journalism? not really
How can this course help you reach your goals?
well, there's little this cours would help me to get higher scores in the ADT, except that less assignment would definitely spare me more time to review my books before my important test in this Nov.
Goals for this course:
Are you interested in producing for this course:
Podcasts? N
Video segments for YouTube? N
Newspaper or wire stories? Y
A Blog? Y
A regular news broadcast? Y
Guests:
Would you like guest speakers from any particular professions?
Yes
Experience:
Please briefly describe any work you have done in the news media.
Editing and translating foreign news, especially soft news into Chinese.
How many television packages have you produced at this school? (Please include links if possible)
Can't remember any.
Do you have any production skills necessary to run a news broadcast? Please list.
Adobe Photoshop and Audition?(can it be accounted?)
News Habits:
Which foreign and Chinese newscasts do you regularly watch?
not regularly, VOA and CRI.
How familiar are you with foreign news broadcasts? Can you watch them at home? Over the Internet?
I don' watch TV, for it is crowded with too many ads.
I surf on the internet more than 5 hours every day. But when I am doing that, I rarely watch news broadcast because there are quite a lot of technical problems and copyright preventness. It is really complicated. So I can only read news from foreign newspaper websites.
Please list some strengths and weaknesses of foreign news broadcasts compared to Chinese broadcasts.
Strengths are that the foreign news broadcasts get and broadcast their news much faster than China's news agencies.
But I really don't like the way the foreign news agencies work. When I say foreign news agencies I mean those US news agencies, who always emphasize their acoup sur and in the meantime gives out lots of breaking fake news. And they would constantly kick up a row, espcially against China, such as alleging hackers from China had invaded their computer system, which is really crazy and ridiculous, for they don't have a proof. And that is really despicable.
What newspapers and news Web sites do you visit regularly?
New York Times and People's Daily(chinese version)
ASSIGNMENT TWO
Please paste the broadcast script you wrote in class on Sept. 10 based on the news wire report here.
US and Chinese officials are discussing the possibility of peace talk with North Korea in Beijing. Both sides urge an establishing of a long-term mechanism and the denuclearization on the Korea penisula. Howerver, the two sides give no details on their discussion of possible peace negotiations. Pyongyang has been wishing for a peace treaty with washington. However, the US envoy shows little interest on such bargainning. China has organized mutiple rounds of talks. The other participants are Russia, South Korea and Japan.
ASSIGNMENT THREE
Please paste the Obituary assignment here. Before you start reading: (South Park is the Emmy® and Peabody® award-winning animated show about four foul-mouthed, troublemaking boys living in one screwed-up town in Colorado, USA, Earth. Parents, teachers, assorted celebrities and strange beings from other planets can't stop the boys from having fun no matter what local or global tragedies may befall the town of South Park. The show premiered on August 13, 1997, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Known for its unbelievably immediate and ruthless responses to world events, South Park's new episodes bring up-to-the-minute news and pop culture icons to the town of South Park, for social commentary and good old-fashioned ridicule.) (I really want to write an obituary for a charater named Kenny, who is designed to die in every episode for I really feel sorry for him sometimes. And I cannot accept writing an obituray for myself, which would doubtlessly make me feel uncomfortable. So please allow me to write an obituary for Kenny instead. Thanks!)
Obituary
Ladies and gentlmen, my dear fellows of South Park, Thanks for coming. Today, we are gathering here for the same one reason---to give an unprecedent funeral for our lovely gibberish Kenny, the little boy we have been loving. Kenny, age 10,a native of a South Park dies in the 9th season, 3rd episode. Actually he dies in every episode. First born in 1997, kenny wasn’t really the son of his father and mother, but the two main producer Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Kenny is beloved by everyone of us. And he died for the lives of all human beings. Before he died, Kenny was an forth grader of South Park Elementary, and studied under our most famous gay teacher---Mr Garriyson. Sorry, Mrs Garrison. (Mr Garrison recently transgendered). Kenny was really hot on playing video games. He plays Nintendo better than anyone in the town and he is the only on in the world who can reach the 60th level of the game Heaven VS Hell produced by SONY’s PSP. We should always bear in mind the moment Kenny reached the 60th level of Heaven VS Hell, a ruthless truck had a crush on him. Yes, he was crushed to death by a truck driver who had just reached the 4th level. The good thing is that after he had gotten the passport of Heaven, he commanded the god’s soldiers against Satan with a golden SONY’s PSP. And he had saved the lives of all of us. And another thing for our children---never play video games while walking, especially on the road. Poor Kenny, his bodies are everywhere. His skin sticks to the flagpole; his blood soaked through the elevator, and his bones scattered on the road, over the playground and maybe in a rat hole. Our poor Kenny would never survive through one single episode, yet no one had ever put a funeral for him. So, here, I’m doing this obituray for him once and for all. After this, let’s move on and wait for his reborn in the brand new episode this November.
ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Write three pitches that you and some classmates can actually produce with the time and resources available to you.
1. Every year, there are college students commit suicide or get some mental disease or lunacy in China. After years of hard studying, these students were finally admitted by the college, yet why do they commited suicide or went mad? pressure? hardship? or not getting well with there friendship or loveship? Most universities have their own doctors devoting to such reseach. We can interview some students on the one hand to know how their school lifes goes like; and some doctors on the other hand to know about the mental as well as physical conditions of our university students at present.
2. There is an LAN system called P2P, in almost every campous internet. It is some kind of downloading system. Students using the campous internet can upload and download all kinds of text, audio and video files on that web page for free, which really offers fun and convenience to us students. But some companies have implead that LAN system is tortious. We can listening to the students voice and the protest of those film and drama producers as well.
3. There are a lot of government conferences in China. The 17th CPC central meeting will be held in Oct. 15th. It will gather the world's media and attention. (The rest of the world sometimes think that China is a one-party autocratically ruled country, which is wrong. ) Interview some CPC members, politics analyst, asking them about some of the policies and plans of the CPC and most importantly, interview some members of the other 7 democratic parties in China, get their comments.
The audience will be English speaking You Tube viewers. Your pitch should offer them something they cannot see elsewhere. This means slice of life and human interest stories are OK, but try to come up with some hard issue pieces or stories related to breaking news as well. Foreigners love to hear about: The Olympics, counterfeit or dangerous products, the environment and global warming, martial arts, student trends, China's economy, interesting tourist destinations, and anything unusual or surprising. Think about a story you would like to hear about in another country, and try it here.
Also think about the big stories in the world, and look for a Chinese connection. Are there Iraqi students here? Does China have an Islamic insurgency? What do Chinese students think about the US presidential race? Who is in charge at the Palestian Embassy here now that the Palestinians have split amid civil war?
Your pitch should include the names of the people you plan to interview, and the shots you plan to include.
ASSIGNMENT FIVE:
The pig disease story.
The source of the story is quite credible. It introduce the information from the government, the villagers and some experts. At the first page of this news, the writer summarized the pig disease story and screetly put her own opinion in the story.
But we aren’t superstitious that it is a perfectly fair and neutral reporting.
On the one hand, she said that there were signs that the infected pigs had polluted the drinking water. And all through the story, there are no clear demonstration except the content of the last paragraph. But we can see from the last paragraph, the scene may not be the reporter or the researcher’s first hand observation. She has no evidence to prove the polluted drinking water theory.
On the other hand, we think that the reporter has missed an important point of the story. All she wants to do is to show that Chinese government refuses to be helpful in pig diseace control. And she also takes SARS as an example. But she has forgotten that China had successfully keep SARS under control. Maybe the international organizations should give more trust to Chinese experts. But news is not about guess, it needs facts and figures. Providing the details of international aids and letting the readers judge may be better.
In general, we thought the story is quite a successful report. We have learnt that we need facts and figures to back our conclusions. And these sources must be credible. We can’t get informations from someone who are not related to the story.
